Main Street / Vista District Connector
The City of Columbia is improving pedestrian and motorist safety along Assembly Street from Pendleton Street to Lady Street in downtown Columbia. Assembly Street services the City of Columbia immediately adjacent to the SC State House complex and just north of the University of South Carolina (USC) campus. The proximity of the facility to the statehouse grounds, state government offices, and USC has resulted in safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles.
The City of Columbia is proposing to address these concerns with pedestrian lighting, revisions to the existing typical sections and parking locations, decreasing the distance a pedestrian or cyclist is exposed to a vehicular travel lane, and installing traffic calming measures through the addition of landscaping and beautification elements. This safety improvement project is designed to improve pedestrian, bicycle, and bus stop facilities without affecting vehicular capacity.
Project Significance
Why It Matters
With continued growth and investment in downtown Columbia, ensuring that residents and visitors can move safely between key destinations is critical. City planning studies have shown that Assembly Street currently acts as a divide between Main Street and the Vista Entertainment District, discouraging pedestrian movement. This improvement project will help bridge that gap by adding high-visibility crosswalks, pedestrian refuge islands, wider sidewalks, and improved roadway design features that prioritize safety and accessibility for all.
Who It Benefits
Residents and visitors alike will benefit from a safer, more walkable corridor that strengthens the connection between Main Street and the Vista Entertainment District. By improving how people move between these two key destinations, the project makes it easier to navigate, explore, and enjoy downtown Columbia while supporting local businesses, encouraging foot traffic, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
